A while back I bought a commercial embroidery machine. A Brother PR1055X.
Ten needles in a row. Each one carries a different thread color, driven by computer control at high speed. A single logo takes thousands to tens of thousands of stitches. Embroidery has always been a luxury, then and now. What takes days by hand, the machine finishes in minutes. Relentless physical force.
But the machine won't move without a blueprint.
The blueprint for embroidery is called digitizing. Converting images and designs into needle coordinate data. Satin stitch, fill stitch, running stitch. You specify stitch type, direction, density, and sequence one by one, accounting for fabric stretch and pull compensation. The data gets exported as DST or PES files and fed to the machine.
There's software for that. Wilcom, the industry standard, starts at about $3,500. Tajima's professional suite runs $8,500. Far more expensive than any DAW.
Some software advertises auto-digitizing, but professionals aren't impressed. Simple logos, fine. But small text, complex gradients, pull compensation tuned per fabric — manual digitizing is in a different league. What these tools do is trace contours with image recognition and assign stitches by rules. Not what you'd call AI.
The AI wave hasn't reached here yet.
Text generation, image generation, music generation — the map has been redrawn in just a few years. But embroidery digitizing sits between the physical constraints of material properties and the physical output of a needle. It doesn't stay inside a screen. Maybe that's a business opportunity. Maybe it's a craftsperson's domain that endures precisely because physics is involved.
Probably both. It's on my list of problems to solve someday.
